Background Information

In March 1997 the 1st International Surfing Reef Symposium was held at the Manly Pacific Parkroyal Hotel, Sydney Australia. (Download a copy of the original brochure 353kb). The symposium provided a forum for discussion and debate on surfing reefs, disseminated information and stimulated community momentum for coastal projects that improved wave breaking quality. Andrew Pitt was the event founder and 1st Symposium Director.   Key note speakers included Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew, Dr Kimo Walker, Dr Kerry Black and Professor Andy Short. The event attracted an audience of influential people from the surfing industry, government and research institutions. Subsequent Symposiums were held in the USA (1998 & 2005), New Zealand (2003), Indonesia (2006) and South Africa in 2009.   Puerto Rico will be hosting the Symposium in 2012.
